Quirky Gulfport, Florida is the place for Florida fun ...and a great setting for the annual
Floridiana Festival & Highwaymen Artist Show!
With a rare "Old Florida" atmosphere, our small town will entice you to return again and again. The Floridiana Festival & Highwaymen Artist show is held in the historic, waterfront Casino Ballroom. Dating back to the 1920's, this unique structure is ideal for showcasing the Florida kitsch of yesteryear. And the beautiful backdrop of Boca Ciega Bay make this a perfect setting in which to discover the art of the Florida Highwaymen.
On February 7th, the Ballroom will be filled with exhibitors of vintage Florida souvenirs, memorabilia, and old tropical decor.
Plus, many of the Florida Highwaymen artists will be participating. Meet and mingle with Highwaymen Artists:
James Gibson Issac Knight Al Black Robert Lewis Roy McLendon Sr. Willie Reagan
Meet Florida authors, including Larry Roberts (the "guru" of Floridiana) (Florida's Golden Age of Souvenirs: 1890 to 1920) & Wayne Ayers (St. Petersburg: The Sunshine State, Tampa Bay's Gulf Beaches, Florida's Grand Hotels from the Gilded Age and Tampa Bay's Gulf Beaches: The Fabulous 1950's and 1960's)
All exhibitors highlight old Florida souvenirs and memorabilia, with everything from roadside attraction kitsch to the hand-tinted Florida landscapes of Barnhill and Harris. Enjoy a nostalgic trip back in time, browsing a beautiful selection of vintage, collectible Floridiana, including old Florida books, ephemera and postcards; flamingo and alligator souvenirs; tinted photographs from Barnhill and Harris, and other old Florida art; vintage Florida license plates and roadside signs; kitschy roadside attraction souvenirs; fruit crate and cigar box labels; rattan and other tropical decor, beautiful Aloha shirts, and much, much more!
Also appearing at the show will be Hermann Trappman, exhibiting prints from his most recent collection, "Obscured by Time: Discovering Florida's Gulf Coast Ancient People" which was recently shown at the Weedon Island Cultural and Natural History Center. Mr. Trappman will also be displaying some of his completed works from a series of paintings for the National Park Service depicting Hernando DeSoto's disasterous 1539 expedition into the Southeastern United States.
Enjoy screenings throughout the day of old Florida tourism films, as well as Florida Highwaymen documentarys. Smokin' Joe Barbeque will be serving great southern style foods on the deck outside, and the Casino's bar will be open all day with both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages.
Show Admission $6.00; $3.00 children under 2 yrs.
Coming from out of town and looking for lodging?
Rooms choices are limited in town, but we can always comfortably recommend the Peninsula Inn in Gulfport for a clean, classy stay. Or, for a more beachy experience, we have a list of a number of great small mom & pop motels over on St. Pete Beach with an ocean view.
